Going into a store to buy a brand new video game (or even a second hand or classic title) can set you back upwards of 40 of whatever your local currency. With rising developer costs seeing the production of some triple A games reach budget highs of over $100 million, devs and the publishers who promote them have to find some way to recuperate the cost. Lucky for us then that as a way of saying thank you for being Xbox Live Gold subscribers, Microsoft are giving our wallets the day off and our consoles the joy of a great game as they’re gifting us Halo 3 this month as part of their Xbox Live Gold game promotion.

With a Metacritic average rating of 94, few will dispute that Halo 3 is one of the greatest games available out there. An Xbox 360 exclusive, the game, released all the way back in 2007 was a critical and chart-topping hit, with its take on the first person shooting genre proving an extremely popular one. Halo 3 reached sales of over 8.1 million (as of January 2008) but, if you happen to be one of the few people who didn’t pick the game up at its most popular time to play through Master Chief’s fight against The Covenant as they tried to take over Earth, it’s free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers from October 16th.

In turn, Might & Magic : Clash of Heroes is also being offered free via the Xbox Live Games With Gold promotion. This title, from Capybara Games is a role playing game, rated at 84, giving it some credibility even if it’s perhaps a little less heard of than the aforementioned Halo 3. It will be available from the 1st of October until the 15th of October.

We’ll keep you posted once we know more about Xbox Live.
