Epic is giving players one more reason, as if you really needed any more, to pick up Gears of War 3 this fall: Beast Mode.
Beast Mode, like Horde Mode, is a cooperative mode where you team up with other players against computer controlled opponents. However, that’s about as far as the similarities goe.
Where Horde Mode is about surviving the onslaught of the Locust army for as long as possible, Beast Mode, according to sources, puts the players in charge of that rampaging army and tasks them with taking down Delta Squad. That’s right, in Beast Mode it’s you get to fight against Marcus Fenix and his boys and make them fear you.
The objective in Beast Mode is not only to take down the squad but to do so with the best time possible. When the mode begins, there is a countdown timer ticking away and once it reaches zero the game is over. The players will have to take down the members of Delta squad, along with their defenses that they’ve set up, in order to add more time to the counter.
Whenever a player takes down a squad member, destroys some defenses or heals an ally they gain money which can be spent to upgrade their characters, purchase respawns and open up new tiers of Locust units.
At the start, every player will begin at the lowest ranks of the Locust hierarchy and have to kill their way to the top. As they earn more money they can transform into more powerful units in order to better battle against the more dangerous members of Delta Squad.
The mode seems somewhat similar to the Mercenaries bonus mode that Resident Evil 4 and 5 offered players, albeit with added player options and more fast paced, brutal combat.
Gears of War 3 is still scheduled to be released September 20th. Be sure to hop into the fray with the other couple of million players expecting to purchase it.
