Gears of War 3 Campaign Raises Over $150K for Charity

It’s not everyday that a AAA-developer lets their fanbase decide the fate of one of their game’s characters. Epic Games did, and they did it for a good cause.

Epic Games recently held a campaign called Fate of Carmine through this campaign Gears of War fans were encouraged to cast their vote by purchasing a shirt that either read Carmine Must Die or Save Carmine. The shirts could be purchased and worn by Xbox LIVE Avatars or users could purchase a real shirt for $20, and wear it proudly to show not only their geek stature, but as a symbol of their generosiouty for donating to charity.

That charity was Chid’s Play. A non-profit organization that donates toys and games to children in hospitals throughout the world. By coming together and casting their votes, Gears of War fans were able to raise over $150,000 for the organization. The polls have since closed, but it’s always great to see people donate for a good cause. The shirt is just an added bonus.

Child’s Play was started by Penny Arcade authors Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik and has raised over five million dollars to help children throughout their 70 parner hospitals. Toys and games–despite what some may say–are a healty part of any child’s life, and can help raise the spirits of those who are hospitalized.

Then there is Carmine, whose fate has been decided by fans of the Gears of War series. For now, it will remain a mystery, according to Cliff Bleszinski, who obviously isn’t going to let fans know what will ultimately happen to Carmine until they play Gears of War 3, which releases in April 5th, 2011. You didn’t think they would tell you what happens to Carmine before you buy the game, did you?
